My Priorities for Norfolk Public Schools

It’s time for change. Our Norfolk schools have been falling behind other districts with lower student performance, frustrated parents, and unsupported educators. I have dedicated my career to teaching and have put three children through NPS. I am ready to bring what I have seen and learned to the School Board and usher in an exciting time of growth and possibility. Thank you for your support!

Dual Enrollment Focus

Expanding opportunities and participation in our dual enrollment programs is central to my mission. Success in these programs isn’t based on one test, it’s hands on practical experience that can lead students to their career of their dreams, while reducing the financial burden of college by earning college credits in high school.

Teaching to the Students, Not the Test

From training on the latest technology to new pedagogical methods, we will help teachers make their classrooms engaging and successful. We need to let our know that we trust our teachers and that they are truly the educational experts that can best guide our children towards sucess. A review of our testing policies and procedures will keep the focus not just on data but also other markers of student achievement.

Looking Towards our Future

Online learning is here to stay. Whether your child takes a class through Virtual Virginia or a teacher utilizes a flipped classroom, student presentation projects on google slides technology has become an important part of our student’s education. As Artificial Intelligence’s presence and influence on education grows, it becomes increasingly important for students to understand Artificial Intelligence’s use as a support instead of a crutch. It is critical that the school board craft AI policies that support students use of the technology in a responsible and educational manner.

Engaging Parents

Parents are their child’s first teacher. As our children enter school they have the opportunity to not only continue learning at home but also a new environment. When parents and teachers work together the learing experience will become powerful. We need to create a space where parents can not only feel heard but also involved in the education of their children. Strong PTA’s and parent volunteers can make this happen. We need to move to a model where parents feel welcomed in school buildings.

“I am thrilled to support Sarah DiCalogero for the Norfolk School Board. She brings a much needed perspective as an educator at Tidewater Community College, as well as a former Maury High School teacher and current NPS parent. She has been a PTA President, an active volunteer with Engage Norfolk, and a math tutor to many Norfolk children (mine included!). Sarah is smart, hard-working and dedicated to the success of our students, their parents and NPS faculty. She understands that Norfolk's future depends on a strong school system. I am grateful that she has stepped up to serve Norfolk Public Schools and our community.”
